Louis did not visit the horses on the trip so we asked him to write for the blog. We think he has done a fine job:

This is the story of someone who had to spend one and a half hours writing about the trip in Normandy. Normandy is a place for people who are very interested in history because it is one of the many deeply historic sites across Europe. Some of the many places that are of deep interest to those history lovers are “The American War Cemetery”. This cemetery consists of just under ten-thousand dead American soldiers who gave their lives for all of us today. As well as Christians buried there, there were also Jews buried in the cemetery with the sign of the star above them. This American War Cemetery is situated on Omaha and it was this beach that suffered the most loss to the Allies where they lost ten-thousand soldiers made up of Americans and the English.

Another site that is of historic evidence is the batterie guns that are situated along the whole of the coast of Normandy and these guns could shoot to an almighty distance of 12 miles out to sea. Unfortunately these guns belonged to the German forces so it made it very difficult for the Allies to reach the French coast because at least half of the Ally forces were wiped out even before they reached land. These battery guns were really one of main strength of the German Army. But eventually the Allied forces did manage to break though the German forces and capture more than half of the battery guns and the English did this through countless and relentless charges at the German lines

Boy's thoughts on the first few days

On Wednesday we visited the Pegasus memorial museum on the river Orne. This is where the original bridge was kept. It was an excellent presentation, with amazing detail. The nice tour guide told and showed us that three gliders set out to capture what is now\ known as Pegasus Bridge. The plan went very well except for the fact that one glider got lost along the way and when to a completely different Nazi occupied bridge which, because their mission was to capture a bridge, they captured. This could be forgiven because it was at night a many Nazi bridges looked the same. She also told us that only one person was killed during this daring raid. Next she took us onto the original bridge. This was ridden with bullet and places where the explosives from the Nazis were kept there where also many wrecked structures of the gliders which had crashed, trying to capture the bridge. After we looked at the structure at the bridge we went and had fizzy drinks at the local cafe. Then we went to a fascinating museum which the whole 2nd world war into context. We also watched a fascinating film about the 2nd world war. Then we went back to the hotel and the park, and then we watched the football. It was a great day.

First of all many apologies for those of you who have been trying to log on to the blog I set up for the trip. Unfortunately problems only came to light when some of the parents tried to access it this week.
Secondly well done for getting to this blog! My intension is to let the students post here over the next few days as well as posting some photographs. I will also continue to post to the twitter page. Our name is Thehallnormandy.
Yesterday (Monday) started with a visit to Arromanches Museum for the Landing of Allied Forces. We were given an excellent talk on the creation of the Mulberry B Artificial Harbour. I know that the boys found the discussion of the engineering involved very interesting. We then visited Longes Sur Mere which was the position for the German Gun placements. Again I felt that the boys saw History come alive.
After lunch we arrived at The American Cemetery at Omaha where 10 000 fallen American Soldiers are buried. This was a moving and important experience for all of us.
Tuesday has been a real great day, less busy but no less interesting. First off we visited The Pegasus Museum which commemorates the crucial Allied taking of The Pegasus Bridge over the Orne. The presentation there was excellent, with detail of the glider landings (amazingly the British Troops managed to land within 45 yards of the bridge without being detected). We then had a drink at the cafe on the bridge which is still owned by the family who owned it at D-Day.

World Population Crisis

There is little doubt that our world population is increasing rapidly. At the death of Christ, the world population is estimated to have been 300,000,000.In 1910, the world population was approximately 1,750,000,000. Now it is around 6,900,000,000. Whilst this brings numerous advantages, the disadvantages of this amazing increase outweigh the disadvantages. Population is hard to control in any respect. For most governments, population control is not an area of discussion. The people of most governments do not want to be told how many children they are permitted to have. Most governments have no means of controlling population anyway. In my opinion, almost all problems we face today would not exist if the world population was substantially smaller. I am not suggesting we pull out straws and kill six billion people, but merely expressing the opinion that if current increases continue, every problem we face will become worse.
Scientists at the University of Utah have announced that 1.2 million years ago, human would be classed by us today as an endangered species. There were so few of us that our development was much slower than today. However as living became easier with the introduction of agriculture and livestock, human numbers rapidly increased as threats that would be faced by most animals disappeared. This increases in numbers undoubtedly speeded up the course of the development of technology: the more people there are the greater the chance is that one will make a breakthrough.
However, population must have a limit. As population increases, problems emerge. Food shortages can lead to a decrease in the quality of life. Increased conflict can lead to strife. And, as we are seeing today, carbon emissions can rise to an uncontrollable level and change the earth’s climate. In short, overpopulation may mean that people start needing more than Earth can provide or we can make. There will no doubt be a shortage of land for farming, grazing and housing and a shortage of water for irrigation and drinking.
China and India are the countries with the largest populations. However, between the two, there is one huge difference. India’s population is spiraling out of control: it is due to overtake China in terms of population by 2040. This is due to China’s policy that every family with just one child will have free education and health care for that child (However, 10 women on average will still have 17 babies). This encourages people to have fewer children and this is most definitely needed: 20 in every 100 people are Chinese, that’s 1 in 5. India, on the other hand, is in a very different situation. On average, every ten women will have 28 children and there are no government attempts to control population and 17 in every 100 people are Indian. These figures contrast with the fact that less than 1 in every 100 people are from the UK*.
In conclusion, the world would be a much better place if populations decreased over the next few centuries. All of our problems would become less severe and possibly even disappear over time and the world would be a happier place with less to worry about.

The Thames Eel Population Suddenly Crashes - Benedict George 8B

The Thames Estuary, previously considered ‘biologically dead’ in the 1960s, was repopulated by European eels and flounders. That population grew continuously over the next forty or so years. Their population was examined and recorded by the Zoological Society through trapping and releasing. However, after decades of stability, we face a disaster. Four years ago, in 2005, there were 1,500 eels in the Thames. Last year, there were only 50. As we live in London I have chosen this topic because it is a local economic and, perhaps more importantly, ecological disaster.
This dramatic drop in the eel population could bring huge consequences, not just for eels but for other species that live in the Thames estuary and for humans as well. Jellied eels have been an old east London dish since the 18th century. Commercial catching of eels is now near impossible and so, more expensively of course, eels must be imported from Northern Ireland and Holland.
There are birds which feed on eels and there are small fish which are fed on by eels in the Thames. These, of course, with the crashing eel population, are bound to experience huge fluctuations in population. This will have a disastrous impact on the Thames estuary’s food chain.
Eels migrate for up to three years, as larvae from the Sargasso Sea, via European rivers, where they spend up to 20 years, after which they cross the Atlantic to spawn and die. It is thought that the sudden drop in their population must be caused either by a diversion – the eels simply skipping their stay in the Thames Estuary each year, or by artificial intrusion caused by humans such as dams, or by new parasitic diseases or by changes in oceanic current due to climate change. The Thames is not alone - other rivers in Britain have also had a reduction in their eel population.

Whatever the cause, one thing is certain. It will be a disaster for all concerned if the eels die out completely.

Horror in Haiti - James Martland

An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale, hit Haiti in the Caribbean on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 just before 5 p.m. local time. The effects of the earthquake have been more severe than they might have been due to the proximity of the epicentre to the capital city, Port-au-Prince. The epicentre was only 10 miles southwest of the capital city. The earthquake is the worst in Haiti for 200 years. There were many severe aftershocks, which meant that the people who did survive were frightened that another earthquake or quakes were following and causing further damage to buildings.
The actual quake occurred along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault, a virtually immovable rock that runs from Montego Bay in Jamaica to the southern part of the island of Hispaniola, which Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic. The fault was pushed by the Caribbean Plate, which moves about 20 millimeters east each year and on this occasion, it moved the fault line. The movement happened six miles underground, which made the earthquake even bigger. The fault is similar to the San Andreas fault in California.
Many residents in Haiti live in tin shacks on the side of steep hills, so the damage the earthquake did was huge. However, the quake not only destroyed the poorer shanty buildings, but also destroyed much stronger structures, including hospitals, schools and the presidential palace. Three million people are now without shelter and temperatures during the days are extremely hot. The president himself is currently living at the airport. No one knows how many people have died, but estimates range from 30 to 50,000 and maybe even as high as 100,000. “Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken,” Henry Bahn, an American official visiting Haiti, told The Associated Press. “The sky is just gray with dust.”
Without this earthquake, Haiti had problems, dire poverty, political coups and fighting and by the end of 2008, four hurricanes had hit the island and flooded whole towns, knocked out bridges and left the people in a desperate condition. They are therefore less able to cope with this latest disaster.
Foreign aid is being organised and Britain, America, China, France, Mexico and many other countries have pledged money, medical supplies and food. Unfortunately, the port is not functioning and communications are down, so it has proved very difficult to get these supplies into Haiti. Many people have reached the nearby Dominican Republic, but are struggling to get into Haiti. As a result, the people are dying unnecessarily, as there are two few doctors and supplies. The injured are lying next to the dead. 7000 people were buried in one mass grave today, which is Friday.

Year 11 People and the Physical World - Plate Tectonics

The first task I would like you to do is to sort out your folder so that you have all your Plate Tectonic notes in one place. I then want you to make a contents page using the titles from your notes - this needs to be printed out.

Next I want you to create a glossary for this unit. Again I want you to type it out. This should be emailed to me by the end of the lesson. There are at least 20 words that you need to know related to plate tectonics. I would work through your textbook pages 6-22 typing out any word and definition that you think is important. The glossary at the back is also useful (page 239). Why not download some flashcards from Mr. Chambers website.

Whilst we are there I suggest that you start to explore this amazing blog from Mr. Chambers - is this the answer to all your revision problems? Also the geobytes website will be really useful to aid your revision.

I want to use a site called voicethread to help you revise and to share our notes. In order to do this you need to create a voicethread user-profile (please put in as little personal information as possible as this can be seen online by others). After you have created a user profile go to this picture log on and answer the question that I have created. I want you all to do this by tomorrow's lesson. You won't be able to see your comments until I have moderated them! But then everyone will be able to use them.

Landslides!

Below you will find the information that we used in today's lesson. This will help you write the essay that I set for you.

Physical (natural) causes of landslides
Landslides can be natural events. There are several physical factors that can lead to a landslide. If there is a period of torrential rainfall this will saturate the soil on the slope and could cause the soil to move quickly downhill. Landslides often happen during hurricanes. If the base of the cliff is eroded by the sea then the rock above it will collapse causing a landslide. This is especially true if the cliff is made up off material that is easily eroded. If the rock is a weak sedimentary rock made of different layers (we call these bedding planes) then it is more likely to cause a landslide as the top layer can slide away. Landslides have a number of other physical ‘triggers.’ Earthquakes can cause landslides as they shake the ground. Volcanoes can cause landslides to occur as they add weight and liquid (lava) to the slope.

Human causes of landslides
Human activity can increase the probability of landslides. Cities are especially vulnerable. In poor countries (LEDCs) people have cut down trees and removed vegetation on slopes so that they can build houses. The roots of this vegetation binds the soil together and protects it from heavy rainfall keeping the slope stable, if vegetation is removed the slope is more at risk of landslides. (We call this deforestation) Placing buildings on slopes increases the weight on a slope and again increases the chance of a landslide. Humans sometimes can undercut (excavation) the bottom of slopes and this increases the instability of the slope and can again cause landslides. Often it is a combination of human and physical processes that cause landslides.

Background and facts
Recent studies rank landslides as thirteenth among natural hazards in terms of the impact they have on humans. Between 1945 and 1990 there were 33 landslides with death tolls of more than 50. These killer events result from large and rapid movement of material down slopes which then bury people and buildings. Worldwide the average death toll from landslides is thought to be about 600 per year. It is difficult to measure the deaths caused by landslides as they often occur with other hazards. Mountainous areas in the tropics that experience hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes or heavy rainfall are especially vulnerable to landslides. Japan experiences a large number of landslides because of its snow melt, typhoons, geology and volcanic eruptions. Landslides can leave people homeless, can disrupt transport and can bury or sweep away people and buildings.

In this week's lesson we have been looking at the tricky question of tourism and development. Tourism and tourists brings money into an area and the tourist industry creates jobs. The facilities and infrastructure (look this word up!) that tourists demand, can be used by the locals.

However tourism can also bring problems (environmetal, cultural and social). Often the money created does not stay in the country.

In the video it was suggested that there is a ''middle way''. We introduced the idea of ''sustainable tourism''

The Geography of dreams and (unacceptable behaviour)

Can we map our dreams and wishes, would there be a pattern to them - How are peoples' wishes different? Do they change depending on where you live in a country or the world? Does age or gender matter? What do you want? What would you change? What is acceptable and what is unacceptable? This research aims to find some basic patterns to show what people dream for and where. It will also discover what you think is most unacceptable in life and if some parts of the country/world think that kissing in public is more acceptable than others....You must be in KS3 (Years 7, 8 or 9) to take part in this research. The data will be made available to you and your school from http://www.ggip.co.uk/ later in the year.

Me and my Moustache

You may have noticed that I appear to have one of Mr. Smith's hamsters attached to my upper lip. But really it is my attempt to grow a moustache for the month of November. If you look carefully around the staff you will see there are quite a few of us! We are looking for your sponsorship so please give generously (but choose me as the best moustache!) It is all in aid of MUFTI DAY - so all your money goes to a good cause.

A few of us are also collecting money outside of school to raise funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity:
FACTS:
· Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the U.K. with at least one many dying every hour from the disease.
· Every year about 35,000 men in the U.K. are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 10,000 men die from the disease.
· One man in 11 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime in the U.K.

For homework and the lesson I am away at camp I have asked you to look into the fieldwork you might conduct if you wanted to measure river variables. Below are some links that you will find useful. For each variable you should:

I was inspired by the English Department's excellent recent assembly introducing an opportunity for you to enter your poetry for this year's anthology. The theme is ''Space and Place''. Sounds like geography to me. So how about looking at some of the links below for some inspiration?

A fellow geography teacher who I used to work with, Noel Jenkins took students from Hampstead School in London and ventured north to Wales and Liverpool for A level fieldwork. While in Liverpool, they were inspired to write some poems!

You have got Mrs Wilson to thank for this homework (she showed me this website).

As discussed in class this homework has a number of aims behind it.

1) To make your geography book more distinguishable from the rest of your books - you will be better organised as a result.

2) To make your book stand out as yours (include a photograph of yourself on it).

3) To allow you time to consider your preferred learning style. Useful for all your subjects and other areas outside school.

Follow the instructions below:

1) Firstly read about multiple intelligences on the boffin squad website, it also explains what the quiz is about.

2) Now take the quiz (40 very quick questions, but take time to consider them), on this part of the 'boffin Squad' website - just follow the on-screen instructions.

3) When you have clicked ''finished (woohoo!)'', you will be shown a graph of your preferred intelligence. Follow the instructions to change the graph into rank order (click 'hot-to-cold').

4) Print this graph (click 'print' to open it in another window). It is a good idea to save you unique number as this will allow you to compare yourself to others. Does the description sound like you? Glue this graph to the front of your book.

5) Are you ''word smart, self smart, picture smart, body smart, people smart, logic smart, music smart or nature smart?'' Consider printing out the description of your preferred intelligence and sticking this to your exercise book - does it sound like you?

6) There are lots of other things you can do now, like looking at ''making the most of your preferred intelligence'' or ''finding out the jobs you might enjoy when you are older'' Just follow the links on the website.

Creating Your Model City - Year 8 WORK IN PROGRESS

In the last few lessons we have been looking at the problems that face many cities in both developed and developing worlds. You have an extended series of homeworks to complete the following tasks:
1) Create a model/map of your perfect city - look here for my help sheet which also includes the success criteria.
2) Produce a poster that advertises your city and would make people want to live here again look at the advice and success criteria.
3) Give a 1 minute presentation on your city.

We have talked about this homework a lot and I have kept on using the idea of sustainability. Most of you seem to be coping with it, but you might want to read the following links for a wider perspective. Remember the skills we said you would need to use when gathering information from the internet!
An excellent starting point is the Global Eye website. This looks at many of the ideas we have been covering.
Making the modern world looks at Curitiba in Brazil and the attempts to make it sustainable. Want to know more about Curitiba? Then look at this website for some ideas or this one which is quite easy
I like the Tate Modern Global Cities Exhibition which has some interesting ideas about urban areas.
The video ''Cities in a Changing World'' on the same site does not offer any solutions, but does set the scene with some super facts and searching questions. Nice backing track as well! Look at the 'speed' section for an idea of the Highway Parks of Istanbul.

Earth As Art Competition

This competition is open to anyone in Years 7-9. The idea is to view the earth as a piece of art and create either a ''geosquish'' or a ''Google-art-earth''. You can submit one geosquish and one Google-art-earth picture. You have the summer holidays to complete complete this. The best attempts will be displayed as part of an exhibition in the New Building Foyer, and there are some exciting prizes to be won.

How do I Geosquish?

I got the geosquish idea from here (where you can also see examples of Geosquishing just so you know what it is).

Steps:

1. Take a picture of somewhere you visit this summer try to make it interesting and original. (Its important to remember to geosquish someone OR something in the picture).

2. Upload the image to Flickr Motivator tool.

3. Add a title and maybe a caption.

4. Download and save your finished product to your computer.

5. Bring your picture into school on USB or disc. Or you can email it to me at the start of September at my school email address.

Can you do better than my China-sea attempt? I imagine so!

How do I create a Google-art-earth picture?

I got this idea from from a teacher I used to work with. Cheers Noel! He found the original idea here

1. Open Google Earth (if you have it or download it) , or try using the NASA Our Earth as Art site:
2. Browse around until you find a spectacular, original image and place.
3. Make a screenshot. (Cntrl + Print Screen), or Google images allows you to do this.
4. Crop the image if necessary - you could paste it into picture-manager.

5. Again upload the image to the Flickf Motivator Tool
6. Add a geographical title and maybe a caption.
7. Download and save your finished product to your computer.

8. Bring your photograph to me at the start of September on USB or disc. Or email it to my school email at the start of September.

I created the Pendle Hill one and 'stole' the Ganges Valley image. If you can make your pictures mean something to you, you are more likely to win!

Your task is to produce a poster showing the differences between Mexico and the USA. You can do this in pairs, it needs to be handed in next lesson. The success criteria for the poster? Good detail, use of geographical language, a range of differences identified, think food, clothes, landscape, climate, people, wealth try to include human and physical geography, try to include facts, make it interesting, colourful presentation techniques. For the first part of this unit you need to be able to ''draw, describe and explain the use and siting of instruments at a weather station.

For each of them you also have to be able to explain how it operates and the scale used as well as explaining the optimum siting for each of them. You have been asked to research information that will help you answer the question/hypothesis - ''The impact of earthquakes depends on the wealth of the country affected'' (20 marks).
We have discussed in class that you need to colect specific detail about at least two earthquakes. Horizons page 10 and 11 details Kobe in Japan and Bam in Iran as two examples you might use (an LEDC and an MEDC are a good place to start).
Below are some links that you might want to use.
Remember that you are trying to develop you independent research skills and that you should make notes to bring to the lesson AND keep referring to the question as you collect these notes. I would not just print stacks of paper; note taking is a skill!

In recent lessons we have been looking at aid and poverty. We have also been looking at the MDGs, LIVE8 and the Make Poverty History campaign - (click on the picture to learn more).

I asked you to research one of the following organisations (you can choose your own if you want)
OXFAM, CHRISTAIN AID, ACTION AID, CAFOD, PRACTICAL ACTION.

You should write your findings in your books.

I will be looking for the following:

What is the aim of the organisation?
What campaigns is it involved in?
What countries or regions does it support?
How does it provide support?
Finally consider - have the MDGs, LIVE8 and Make Poverty History made a difference?

A good piece of work will be neat, have detail - but it will be in your own words not just cut and pasted from the website. It will answer the questions above and will have your own ideas expressed in a geographical way.

We discussed in a recent lesson that it is important to look at both sides of an argument and to be discerning in our consideration of websites - are they one-sided. Whilst looking at the flowing sites and content consider what are the main arguments, how do they fit into our question, are the arguments one sided, what are your feelings about these arguments. Also consider how might you record these arguments as notes (those research skills again!)

For you first task I would like you to visit the Global Eye Website. This is a site aimed at students and is a little basic, however it is a good place to start. Consider the key words that we are trying to define and the key questions that we identified in the lesson. Make some notes (remember to use your new found research skills), can you start to give these notes some structure?
