Year 9 El Salvador Earthquake enquiry

One of the success criteria for this enquiry is that you include relevant research. Remember some of the websites that are recommended reading here were written as the events unfolded and so some of the facts (for example - numbers of dead), would have changed over time.

Remember we have discussed the four main areas you should cover for your enquiry write up. Try to collect your extra research according to these (background, causes, effects and reaction).

Year 9 Development Project

Your extended homework is posted here. Remember to focus on the success criteria. Useful links are below:
A good starting point is Global Eye. This is an online magazine with loads of interactive stuff and aimed at you in terms of the language it uses. Specific items you might find useful are the issue on Malaysia (which has some good information on the economy). Uganda is also covered here.
If you need to understand the broader issues then Human Development report is the place for you. Or are you after facts, then try the CIA Factbook.
Want a discussion of some of the issues try globalissues.org (we will use this later when we look at causes of poverty and under-development)
Why not take a test to help you understand - BBC bitesize

Year 9 Preparation for Migration essay

In the lesson this week we have been looking at migration and have covered some contentious issues. Your homework was to re-read over the material we have covered and to conduct some extra research into this issue. I would like you to come to the lesson with 3 opinions and 3 facts that you will use for your short essay (a,b or c). Below are some links that you will find useful.

A case study of migration from BBC schools
More 'child illegals' are crossing into the USA a report states.
The dangers of crossing the border
What are your views of this - 'Vigilantes' set for Mexico border patrol
Read advice from the Mexican Government about crossing in safety- what do you think the US Government think of this?
Mexican migrants' growing influence - what are the implications of this?
What does Angelina Jolie say about migration?

Year 9 - Victor Tecton Report

Here are some links that will help you prepare for the in-class report you are going to write. Remember Victor needs you to suggest which methods of precaution and prediction you would use. He needs you to justify your choices and to use an annotated map of the area to help you explain where and why you are going to position them.
Extra research used effectively will gain you extra marks.

Year 9 Earthquake Essay Research

You have been asked to research information that will help you answer the question/hypothesis - ''The impact of earthquakes depends on the wealth of the country affected'' (20 marks).
We have discussed in class that you need to colect specific detail about at least two earthquakes. Horizons page 10 and 11 details Kobe in Japan and Bam in Iran as two examples you might use (an LEDC and an MEDC are a good place to start).
Below are some links that you might want to use.
Remember that you are trying to develop you independent research skills and that you should make notes to bring to the lesson AND keep referring to the question as you collect these notes. I would not just print stacks of paper; note taking is a skill!

Wikipedia is always a good place to start research (though watch out for mistakes!) Look here for information about KOBE and here for BAM

Georesources has an excellent page on KOBE

The BBC website is always excellent for this type of essay. Click here for KOBE and here for BAM

The USGS website has some broad information about the KOBE earthquake and Bam

Year 9 Research into aid

In recent lessons we have been looking at aid and poverty. We have also been looking at the MDGs, LIVE8 and the Make Poverty History campaign - (click on the picture to learn more).

I asked you to research one of the following organisations (you can choose your own if you want)
OXFAM, CHRISTAIN AID, ACTION AID, CAFOD, PRACTICAL ACTION.

You should write your findings in your books.

I will be looking for the following:

What is the aim of the organisation?
What campaigns is it involved in?
What countries or regions does it support?
How does it provide support?
Finally consider - have the MDGs, LIVE8 and Make Poverty History made a difference?

A good piece of work will be neat, have detail - but it will be in your own words not just cut and pasted from the website. It will answer the questions above and will have your own ideas expressed in a geographical way.

Year 9 Concept Map - The causes of development.

Good - if you have got this far, you are taking the work seriously. Firstly a reminder of the success criteria for this piece of work -

•Detail under each factor, possibly with researched examples and facts.
•Pictures to represent each of the factors.
•Factors linked up, with the main connections in red.
•Identify the three main causes of poverty, colour these in red and explain why.
•Extra causes included and researched.

Now some links that will help you with this concept map. The Global Eye website has some excellent material on the causes of poverty, including - WATER, TRADE and FOOD.
