Me and my Moustache

You may have noticed that I appear to have one of Mr. Smith's hamsters attached to my upper lip. But really it is my attempt to grow a moustache for the month of November. If you look carefully around the staff you will see there are quite a few of us! We are looking for your sponsorship so please give generously (but choose me as the best moustache!) It is all in aid of MUFTI DAY - so all your money goes to a good cause.

A few of us are also collecting money outside of school to raise funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity:
FACTS:
· Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the U.K. with at least one many dying every hour from the disease.
· Every year about 35,000 men in the U.K. are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 10,000 men die from the disease.
· One man in 11 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime in the U.K.

So if you want to also support this worthwhile charity sponsor my Mo (moustache) and fight against prostate cancer please go to http://www.movember.com/ex/donate/?action=sponsorlink&rego=94734, enter my registration number which is 94734 and your credit card details. Or you can sponsor me by cheque made payable to "The Prostate Cancer Charity" clearly marking the donation as being for my Registration Number: 94734. Please mail cheques to: The Prostate Cancer Charity, ATT: Movember, First Floor, Cambridge House, 100 Cambridge Grove, Hammersmith, London W6 0LE.
All donations are made directly to The Prostate Cancer Charity which will use the money to fund high quality research into the causes, treatment and impact of prostate cancer and to provide support and information to men and their families.

Cheers Mr B.

Year 12 Measuring River Variables

For homework and the lesson I am away at camp I have asked you to look into the fieldwork you might conduct if you wanted to measure river variables. Below are some links that you will find useful. For each variable you should:
1) Define the variable
2) Describe the method of measurement for this variable, including the equipment you would need.
3) Any calculations you would need to do in order to achieve the results.
4) Discuss any potential problems with this approach.
Use diagrams where appropriate.

(reminder of the variables: stream width, depth, bank-full width, cross-sectional area, discharge, gradient, velocity, internal friction, external friction, rock or pebble size)

The Geography site - offers an excellent, easy to understand summary of the techniques.
Journey along a river on this website - it is worth surfing around this site as it has some excellent summary pages of the aspects we have been covering recently.
Try Geography High - a virtual geography school!
Why not try Thinkquest - also good for revision

No cutting and pasting!

English Department Poetry Anthology.

I was inspired by the English Department's excellent recent assembly introducing an opportunity for you to enter your poetry for this year's anthology. The theme is ''Space and Place''. Sounds like geography to me. So how about looking at some of the links below for some inspiration?

An excellent starting point is Geography Poetry Corner.

Or search the Children's Poetry Archive for some inspiration. I love this site.

A fellow geography teacher who I used to work with, Noel Jenkins took students from Hampstead School in London and ventured north to Wales and Liverpool for A level fieldwork. While in Liverpool, they were inspired to write some poems!

There is a poetry list from people from all over the world many translated from their original language.

Year 12 Storm Hydrographs and Drainage Basin Cycle review

So holidays are almost upon us, and whilst I go in search of Orangutans you guys can review this terms work so far. Why not try the BBC Scotland Education website. The questions are especially useful. (With thanks to Little Miss Sunshine for the link - check out her blog).

(It also gives me the excuse to use a photograph I took from a small plane over the Mekong flying between Cambodia and Laos this summer (check out those ox-bow lakes)

Yeah baby! Year 10

Below you will find links to the articles we used in today's Directed Reading Groupwork Task. (All from BBC website)

A reminder of the syllabus ideas we are currently covering:

"Describe the problems associated with the growth of the world's population and show an understanding of the causes and consequences of over-population.''
''Understand the link between population and resources.''
''Discuss the ways in which population growth can be controlled (reduced poverty, improved health care, better education, improved role of women, family planing etc).''
''How have LEDC Governments responded to an increase in birth rate?''
Feel free to print them off, cut and paste or just re-read them. Remember I have tried to make them region specific to us.
Remember this is only half the story and there are other, more positive views of population growth.
Anyone who finds and brings me a similarly relevant article on the issues of global population will get a merit and a sticker.
How do you feel about this idea: How ethical is my baby
